1153. Suffix is is formed a small number of nouns

 इस् is. With the suffix is is formed a small number (about a dozen) of nouns.

a. They are in part nouns of action, but most are used concretely. The radical syllable has the guṇa-strengthening, and the accent is on the suffix (except in jyótis lightvyáthis, andā́misraw meat). Examples are: arcísrocís, and çocís lightchadís or chardís coverbarhís strawvartís tracksarpís butterhavís oblationdyotis light, andkravís raw fleshAvis-, pā́thisbhrājis-, and máhis- are isolated variants of stems in as; and túvis-, çucis-, and surabhis- appear inorganically for tuvi etc. in a few compounds or derivatives.
