1197. sa. The words ending in suffixal

स sa. The words ending in suffixal स sa, with or without preceding union-vowel, are a heterogeneous group, and in considerable part of obscure derivation. Thus:

a. With sa simply: gṛtsa cleverjeṣá winning (rather, aoristic s? 1148j), -dṛkṣa lookingrukṣá shiningrūkṣá rough; útsa n. fountain; bhīṣā́ f. fear (or from the secondary root bhīṣ).

b. With preceding i-vowel: taviṣá (f. táviṣīstrongmahiṣá (f. máhiṣīmightybhariṣá (?) seeking booty; ṛjīṣá rushingpúrīṣa rubbishmanīṣā́ f. devotion; and comparerayīṣín (? SV.).

c. With preceding u-vowel: aruṣá (f. áruṣīredaçúṣa ravenoustáruṣa overcomerpúruṣa and mánuṣa (-us-a?) man; pīyū́ṣa biestings.
